Congratulations to Prof. Kang-Yen Chiu of our department on receiving
the 🏅 Jack Medal (The Jack Medal) awarded by the
International Association for the Study of Scottish Literatures (IASSL).
Prof. Chiu is the only awardee worldwide this year and also the first Chinese scholar to receive this honor since the establishment of the award.
This prestigious international prize recognizes the best scholarly article of the year in Scottish literary studies on the theme of “Reception” or “Diaspora.”
The scope of the award covers research on literary traditions in Scots, English, Gaelic, and Latin.
The Jack Medal was established in 2018 in memory of
Professor R. D. S. Jack (1941–2016), Emeritus Professor at the University of Edinburgh.
Professor Jack devoted his career to exploring the connections between Scottish literature and Continental European culture. His seminal work, The Italian Influence on Scottish Literature (1972), marked a major milestone in cross-cultural literary studies.
The award was officially renamed “The Jack Medal” in 2021 to honor his lifelong commitment to promoting Scottish literature on the global stage.
Prof. Chiu has long been dedicated to research in Scottish literature and cross-cultural studies.
This award represents a significant milestone in his academic career and highlights our department’s growing international impact in the humanities.
