Title: What can acoustic data tell us about Southern Min tone sandhi?

Abstract:
The Southern Min tone sandhi circle has attracted much research attention regarding its productivity and mental representation. Previous studies suggested that the tone sandhi circle is categorical and structure-preserving, i.e., no new tones are involved. Nevertheless, early studies based on auditory judgment have already pointed out subtle phonetic differences between the citation and sandhi tones. The current study examines the phonetic realizations of both citation and sandhi tones in Xiamen Southern Min with rich production data from children to senior speakers, hoping to elucidate the acquisition patterns of both the citation and sandhi tones. The solid acoustic data can also provide insights into the phonological debate about the mental representation of the Southern Min tone sandhi circle.

We encourage you to reserve the time and register early.

We look forward to your participation!
